Establish Communications with Families

Purpose

To establish adults in students lives as partners and support systems for students’ growth.

Outcome

By capturing the assistance of students’ families, teachers can build a 24-hour support system for students as they struggle through difficult parts of the course and celebrate their successes.

Action Steps

  • Build a structure for check-ins that includes key pieces of data about a student’s performance. Gather data for all students.
  • Reach out to family members using systems that allow contact in the languages spoken at home.
  • Share key pieces of data to help them understand their students’ performance and experience.
  • Solicit help or communicate cause for celebration. Ask permission to follow-up if help is needed.
  • Be prepared with a list of additional resources should students be struggling in AP and parents are unable to provide academic support.
