Teach Cooperative Learning Strategies at the Start of the Year

Purpose

To enhance students’ learning through cooperative learning strategies.

Outcome

Cooperative learning can support students’ development of skills and mindsets to be successful in AP coursework, including practice verbalizing ideas, comparing ideas, collaboration with peers, and the creation of a strong classroom culture.

Action Steps

  • Utilize Inside/Outside Discussion Circles.
  • Utilize the Numbered Heads Together strategy — promotes group work AND individual accountability.
  • Consider the Jigsaw strategy —home group/expert group activity.
  • Use Think-Pair Share: students work as pairs to share ideas on a topic. Students are encouraged to disagree. The pair discussions are followed by a whole group discussion.
  • Assign “reporters” for small groups to help shyer students participate.
