Increase Cultural Responsiveness in Math Classes

Purpose

To utilize a culturally responsive approach and lens for math instruction to increase rigor, investment and relevance

Outcome

Students will make connections to the content of the mathematics curriculum through representations from their own lives.

Action Steps

  • In teaching percentages and ratios, have students collect data about the types of homes and buildings in their neighborhoods.
  • Have students do price comparisons in local stores.
  • Have students choose a news item from their community news to track over time.
  • Solicit real-world examples from students to describe and explain mathematical concepts.
