Gamify the Curriculum

Purpose

To support and encourage students’ motivation by making content engaging and use principles from game development to spark interest.

Outcome

Students will become deeply invested in content and develop the skills and mindsets to be successful in AP coursework.

Action Steps

  • When possible, incorporate a story into the content. Find ways to assess the entire project process, rather than just the final work.
  • Encourage risk-taking and “small failures” early on as a key to the learning process, and then provide constructive feedback at every stage of the design process.
  • Allow students some element of choice, such as project selection.
  • Use adequate scaffolding of difficult content and recognize progress.
  • Challenge your students to create a project or initiative related to the content that they or their community cares deeply about.
