Personalized Feedback

Purpose

To provide specific, individualized, and timely feedback to students based on their performance the week prior.

Outcome

Students learn through guided feedback and constructive critique of their work.

Action Steps

Students use a feedback form, highlighting the top areas in which they had shown success in the last week and what they should work on next.

Consider the who (all students vs targeted students), the where/when (during class, during advisory, after school), and the how (individually, in small groups).

The bottom of the form should read: “”For the next assignment, next topic or next assessment, I think you want to focus your studying on ____________ by doing _____________(provide some suggestions).

Unless it’s strictly content, most students need suggestions on how to know HOW to focus their studies, not just WHAT to focus their studies on. Oftentimes, a student needs to work on the same thing over and over because they haven’t figured out the “”how.”” By using this scaffold (and seeing how they do with it), the teacher and the student can discuss the process and not simply the result at the following week’s check-in.

Addendum

At the end of a unit, teachers can request timely feedback from students asking about positive aspects of their instruction and areas of opportunity, as perceived by students.
