Creating An Anti-Bias Classroom Culture

To show that teachers value students’ identities and lives through curriculum.

The teacher develops an anti-bias approach to instruction, prioritizing critical student engagement, analysis, and voice, which rests on a foundation of mutual dialogue; teachers become learners and learners become teachers. This is especially important when talking about issues of identity, power, privilege, and bias, where deep understanding relies on multiple perspectives.

Develop lessons that examine known phenomena (historical events, power structures, etc.). Prioritize writing prompts and activities that support critical student engagement and analysis.

Use open-ended questions and critical literacy strategies where students analyze prevailing interpretations of a text and produce alternative ones.
