Increase Cultural Responsiveness (STEAM Classrooms)

Purpose

To assess the classroom curricula, content, and resources to ensure a representative approach.

Outcome

This technique increases students’ belief that their teachers deeply understand their content area and know how to teach it in a way that values students’ experiences and lives.

Action Steps

  • Follow guidance on using students’ everyday lives as the starting point for learning, and on making real-life connections between academic content and local neighborhoods, culture, environment, community issues, and current events.
  • Ensure that your curriculum provides avenues for students to see STEAM as a way to understand and improve their world, take actions that combat inequity or promote equity, and connect learning to social, political, and/or environmental concerns.
