To allow students to participate in the building of collective knowledge through a shared leadership opportunity.
Outcome
Students will build a sense of shared responsibility, belonging, and leadership with a protocol that supports shared learning.
Action Steps
Select a text that is challenging.
Students read selected text. They highlight three sentences or concepts that stood out for them and write them on an index card.
On the back of the card, they should write what the concept meant to them or how it connects to previously learned concepts.
Divide students into groups of three–students A, B, and C.
Student A will share the concept they selected.
The other two students discuss the selected concept.
The first student has the “last word” in explaining why they chose it.
All students take a turn at sharing their chosen concept.
This can be varied by having students write down three probing or outstanding questions about challenging texts. The other two students attempt to discuss and answer them.
