Nearly 2,500 students to sharpen Advanced Placement knowledge and skills in Saturday classes this weekend
BOSTON – March 3, 2020 – Nearly 2,500 students will be attending Mass Insight Education & Research’s unique “Saturday @ School” program for Advanced Placement coursework at schools across Massachusetts this Saturday, March 7th. Mass Insight’s AP STEM & English program serves almost 10,000 students in more than 80 partner high schools and is the largest high school STEM program in Massachusetts.
Eight high schools will host a total of 2,431 students who have registered to attend Saturday @ School, additional classes designed to support students enrolled in a variety of AP subjects. Saturday’s classes will take place at John D. O’Bryant in Boston, Chelsea High School, Grafton Memorial High School, Nashoba Valley Technical High School, New Bedford High School, Springfield Central High School, Woburn High School, and Worcester North High School.
The 2020 Massachusetts’ Teacher of the Year, Takeru Nagayoshi, who teaches English at New Bedford High School, will lead one of Saturday’s classes. “Our Saturday classes give students extra help through a fresh perspective or new teaching style. They also provide AP teachers with an opportunity to network, push their practice, and learn among students from other districts,” Nagayoshi said.
In addition to English language and literature, Saturday’s classes will also be held in the AP STEM subjects of computer science, biology, chemistry, environmental science, physics, calculus, and statistics. Saturday’s program will result in nearly 10,000 hours of additional learning time in just one day.
Sally Guadagno, Mass Insight’s managing director of AP STEM & English said, “It is inspiring to see so many students attending classes on Saturday. Their participation is a real indicator of the commitment so many high school students and teachers have to being successful in college-level AP courses and getting an early start on college.”
Mass Insight partners with high schools to increase the diversity of enrollment in and help more students succeed in AP classes. The Saturday @ School program provides support to historically underserved students who are often enrolling in challenging AP classes for the first time. Mass Insight organizes more than 300 Saturday @ School sessions at high schools across Massachusetts during the school year.
According to the College Board, Massachusetts has led the nation for four years in a row in the percentage of high school seniors scoring a three or higher on AP exams.
