All Over The Map: Massachusetts High School Graduation Requirements

A new report by the Voices for Academic Equity Coalition, of which Mass Insight is a founding member, unpacks the status of the state’s MassCore curriculum, a recommended opt-in course of study for the state’s high school students.

Massachusetts currently has just three state high school graduation requirements: taking physical education courses, taking a U.S. History and civics course, and passing the 10th grade MCAS exam—a requirement the voters might reject through voting on an initiative petition at election day in November.

This first of its kind report digs into the data about the availability of the MassCore curriculum to all students and what policymakers must consider if MassCore would be required in the future, something that is under discussion.  The report is also useful in considering the alignment and implementation of high school curriculum and access to college and career courses.  The report can be found here.
